According to El Tiempo (translated), 17 children die each month in Chocó. It's important to remember that this is because of the armed conflict there, not because of some innate ignorance of the local people, as you might believe from the article. If, as the article says, people wash, throw their waste and drink from the same water, they have a system for doing so in strategic parts of the river so that they don't end up drinking dirty water, in accordance with a logic which has developed from 400 years (more, in the case of the indeigenous people) of living in this environment.

Orlando Cabrera y el bies colombiano/Orlando Cabrera and Colombian baseball

Cabrera pays for it all — uniforms, equipment, coaches, English lessons. It is a small price, the Angels' shortstop says, to accelerate the development of baseball in his homeland. Link
Helping out

Declaraciones Juventud Afrodescendiente/Declarations of the Afro-descendant youth

(In English below)

Declaration of those and the Youths African-American descendants from Latin America and the Caribbean "The Human rights and the descending African-American Youths in the Region of the America " State of the Art and Challenges
Cali Colombia , 13 at March 17 the 2007
Preamble:
We greet to the Organizing Committee of the denominated Encounter "The Human rights and the descending African-American Youths in the Region of the America" for the construction and celebration of this extremely important instance in what has to do with the pursuit and the continuity of the process in the articulation of the results of the III World Conference Against the Racism, the Racial Discrimination, the Xenophobia and the Related forms of intolerance.
We greet to youth's international organisms, to the cooperation agencies, and to all those organisms that are committed in the fight of the towns and descending African-American communities against the racism, the racial discrimination, the xenophobia and all the related forms of intolerance. IIICMRD
We stand out that the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean live different realities and they conform a region specifically with great sociocultural and ethnic diversity that you/they share big difficulties, the inequity and the poverty. The region presents the worst distribution of revenues in the world, for what our main challenge is to overcome this inequality, the accumulation of the wealth, the racism, the discrimination, the xenophobia, the sexism, the homofobia and the intolerance in all its forms.
We do with absolute concern the non inclusion of the specific topics of childhood, adolescence and youth; groups étarios that represent in the practice the most vulnerable sectors, victims of racism and racial discrimination in terms of their Human rights, Political, Economic, Social, Cultural and environmental to level of all Latin America and the Caribbean.
We underline that the reality of those and the young afrodescendientes at level of the indicators of Human Development, it is intimately bound with the previous situation and they constitute a serious violation to the Human rights.
We affirm that the communities afrodescendientes are located in areas of strategic importance for the development of the countries of Latin America, however we see like in the last years the poverty, the marginalidad and the exclusion increases the descending situation of the African-American one; the forced displacement, the environmental racism deepens the inequedidades of these towns.
We affirm the necessity that the States combats the manifestations of rejection toward the migrants, immigrants and refugees and the racist acts that generate xenophobic behaviors to these towns and we also affirm the necessity to protect the human rights guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of the Human rights.
We remember that the 191 countries members of the United Nations committed in completing the Objectives of Development Of the Millennium, settled down by the Summit of the Millennium (carried out in the General Assembly of the United Nations / September 8 the 2000). In that sense to fulfill this objectives, we consider that the states should deepen the efforts to overcome the inequities that have in the base the racism and the racial discrimination.
We emphasize that Latin America and the Caribbean live limited their development opportunities for a great public debt and the unfavorable conditions that they have settled down to guarantee their execution. It will be impossible for our countries to reach the Objectives of Development of the Millennium (ODMs), with the established payment conditions and they become necessary reformular those conditions that allow to our countries to invest the necessary resources for an equal development.
Remembering that in the mark of the Civic Conference against the Racism taken place in Santiago from Chile (2000), the World Conference against the Racism, the racial discrimination, the xenophobia and all the related forms of intolerance carried out in Durban(2001) and the Regional Conference of the America "you ADVANCE AND CHALLENGES IN THE PLAN OF ACTION AGAINST THE RACISM, RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, XENOPHOBIA AND RELATED INTOLERANCES ", taken place in Brasilia, those and the youths from Latin America and the Caribbean, through the official spaces of discussion, we exercised an important incidence in what concerns to the final results emanated in the declarations and action plans. In such a sense we stand out the following thing:
That the derived inputs of the Declaration of Santiago from Chile as regards youth were the conceptual and ideological base of the Declaration and Plan of Action of the youth's International Summit "United to combat the racism: a Juvenile Vision" celebrated one week before the III CMCRD.
That those and the young afrodescendientes from the realization of the previous conferences, we have continued in the invigoration work, visibilización, application and implementation of the conclusions and plans there defined.
In that sense bigger measures of the international organisms and financial institutions are required for the technical and financial cooperation that facilitates the attainment and continuity of our plans and action programs.
We remember that in these five years a great one numbers of ordinances, resolutions and cooperation protocols were promulgated by the states and an intense debate about the opportunity and the necessity of politicians you publish for the promotion of the racial equality in Latin America and the Caribbean, however the situation of the economic, social, cultural, territorial and environmental Rights of the African-American descendants continues being an important concern, since we see a setback in some countries of the region.
We consider that it is necessary to stress that of the 219 measures of the Program of Action of Durban, there are important measures that were not implemented, as those that recommend preferential funds for the areas inhabited by the communities and towns afrodescendientes, as well as repairs and compensations in economic and juridical aspects, recognition of the alternative and community media as expression vehicles, the necessity of effective measures the criminal acts motivated especially by the racism in the youths afrodescendientes to combat and political of health you specify for these populations.
We recognize the important list that those and the youths play in the efectivizacion of the regional strategy, of monitoreo, pursuit to combat the racism and to promote the racial justness, of I generate, and the alliances with the different groups ethnic, different generations and different movements of sexual diversity; with the purpose of creating mechanisms institutionalized to approach the topics of racial discrimination, racism and the related forms of intolerance, through the Net of Young of Strategic Alliance Afrolatina and Caribbean.
In that sense those and the gathered youths propose:
1 - to evaluate and monitorear the public politicians adopted by the states and to elaborate regional reports of statistical desagregadas for the different variables and indicators on the descending African-American towns and on their vulnerability situation, remarking the juvenile topic.
2 - it is important to point to the law of quotas to guarantee the equality between the sexes and the autonomy of the women afrodescendientes in all the dimensions of the life, respecting the specificities of the different ethnic groups, generations and diverse sexual orientations, like form of assuring the human rights, among them the sexual and reproductive rights, the right to a life free of violence, the right to make decisions on their body, the right to the salary justness and the right to participate in the economic life of their countries.
3 - it is necessary to generate specific programs with the purpose of establishing the assignment of technical resources and financiers for the sostenibilidad of plans, programs, projects and elaborated proposals and presented by the organizations of young afrodescendientes without detriment of their autonomy.
4 - we demand to the international organisms, cooperation agencies and public and private institutions to that support the calendars of the descending African-American youths, reaffirming this way the autonomy and the exercise of their Rights.
5 - we recommend vehemently to the international organisms and cooperation agencies to that the programs designed for and for those and the descending African-American youths, be assumed and directed by juvenile organizations, nets and movements recognized by these towns.
6 - we demand the States of Latin America and the Caribbean to implement measures and political tendientes to solve the violence in all their manifestations: the violence of State, especially the police, military and artificial violence; political, institutional violence, maidservant, of gender, sexual, homofóbica, racial, symbolic, violence that you/they are been in the implementation of the economic politicians, and other suffering ways of violence by the historically excluded groups; and, of course, violence at levels of the armed conflicts that exist in some of the countries of the region.
7 - we demand the governments to promote equally, the infrastructure and the access to new technologies of information and communication, including the internet and the alternative media and comuntaria to contribute to the democratization of the informations in the fight against the racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and all the related forms of intolerance.
8 - we demand to the states to assign economic resources, in way preserved for the implementation of the measures assumed in III CMCR, in order to eradicate the Poverty, to guarantee the execution of the human rights and in particular you kill them in racism, xenophobia and other ways of intolerance.
9 - we affirm the necessity to consolidate the instruments and legal mechanisms of protection of the human rights of those and the descending African-American youths, guaranteeing the access and the relevancy on the part of the States.
We reaffirm the validity of the regional Conferences and the resulting products of these, organized in Strasbourg, Santiago from Chile, Dakar, Teheran, Sudáfrica, Regional Shop for the Adoption and Implementation of Affirmative Actions for LAC, Declaration and Plan of Action of the Youth's International Summit "United to combat the racism: a juvenile vision" and the Conference of Regional of the America Advances and Challenges in the fight against the racism, the racial discrimination, the xenophobia and all the forms of intolerance.

"Sound in the Era of Mechanical Reproduction"

"Sound in the Era of Mechanical Reproduction"

November 2-3, 2007

Hagley Library, Wilmington, Delaware

For the conference, "Sound in the Era of Mechanical Reproduction,"
the Center for the History of Business, Technology and Society
invites proposals for empirically based historical papers that
analyze sound in commercial, technological, and legal environments
since the late 19th century. The conference will take place November
2-3, 2007 at the Hagley Library in Wilmington, Delaware. Our
principal interest is in papers that explore the integration of sound
with the commercial practices of music, radio, film, and television,
and the commercial engineering of sound in social environments such
as shopping and the workplace. Proposals can consider the legal and
cultural implications of innovations in technology and business
practices, such as the impact on the political economy of sound and
notions of sound and sound-based products as property. We also
encourage papers that explore sources of innovation in sound and
music (especially from communities and/or business enterprises
defined by ethnicity, race, or region), as well as those focusing on
the transnational circulation of sound-related technologies and
business practices.

Proposals should be no more than 500 words and accompanied by a short
cv. Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2007. The program committee
includes David Suisman, Susan Strasser, Philip Scranton and Roger
Horowitz. Travel support is available for those presenting papers at
the conference. To submit a proposal or to obtain more information,

Conference - Ethnic Studies and labor in the Corporate University

An important conference given the state of a university like mine (NYU), which is on a heavy neoliberal kick - combining departments (to fire staff), busting unions (they claim that teaching assistants don't work), etc. Nonetheless, for us academics, this is the nature of the beast we work in.

Humanities or Human Resources? The Future of Ethnic Studies and Labor in the Corporate University

Friday, April 13, 2007
New York University
Department of Social and Cultural Analysis
41 E. 11th Street, 7th Floor
NY, NY 10003

As corporate models of management and decision-making take hold of more and more colleges and universities, a growing number of students, faculty and staff are facing threats to ethnic studies programs, assaults on the integrity of academic decision-making, and the casualization of the university labor force. This conference will engage the debates surrounding what has been termed the corporate university, especially those debates that address questions of race, gender, sexuality, ability, nation, and class.

Speakers and presenters include Professor George Sanchez, Director of the Program in American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California; Alexis Shotwell, Graduate Student in the History of Conscious Program, University of California at Santa Cruz; and Professor Randy Martin, Director of the Graduate Program in Arts Politics at New York University.

The conference is free, open to the public and sponsored by New York University's Program in American Studies.

I know, I know, first I'm talking trash on Shakira, and now this - I'm probably pushing my luck. But you've gotta check out this little animated cartoon by Amnesty International, making fun of the paramilitary demobilization. Link/Enlace It has apparently ticked off the Colombian government, according to El Tiempo. It's kind of funny, in that ironic-spoof-on-the-1950s-consumerism-and-saccharine-pop-culture genre that liberal white people seem to like, but the more important points are that it links the farce of demobilization to a justification for US aid ("don't worry folks, human rights are under control," we are told, as Colombian congresspeople and even a Cabinet minister are revealed to be in bed with the paramilitaries guilty of massacres, extortion, and drug trafficking for over a decade) and shows the "demobilized" paramilitaries becoming paid government informers. What this informant thing means is that paramilitaries and guerrillas from groups like the FARC turn themselves in to the government and are subsequently paid by the head for people they turn in to the government. They often invent things just to get the money and their victims, guilty or not, end up getting incarcerated if they're lucky, and kidnapped, tortured, disappeared, and killed if they are not. It's also pretty sad for the ex-combatants themselves, many forcibly drafted by these armed groups and then, demobilised, put into this kind of setting. Scary. And funded by the taxes we are about to pay on April 15 here in the US.

Jean Baudrillard is "a talisman: a symptom, a sign, a charm, and above all, a password into the next universe," (Kroker and Levin, BC 5); if you read too much Baudrillard "you are in danger of turning into a hyper-reader, and transforming the text under the power of your imagination into something of the sort it became in the hands of the Neo Geos and their apologists. At this point you are taking Baudrillard too seriously," (Danto, 48); "Baudrillard has begun to work equally hard at playing the Disappearing Theorist. He has progressively and deliberately abandoned the protocols of systematic research, scrupulous argument, thesis formulation, 'critique' -- in favor of a style of personal jotting (and jaunting) about the world ... this travelling man is no Mad Max. There's no sense in Baudrillard's glass bubble that anything nasty might happen," (Morris, HR, 28-9). "The upshot of Baudrillard's analyses is to license a kind of intellectual dandyism," (Callinicos, 147). And so, "in the end, does Theory ... come to embrace itself as work-of-art, dire object, and absolute commodity," (Morris, 101, 210).

CONVOCATORIA PARA ARTÍCULOS
Dossier especial sobre Música y estudios sobre Performance
Trans. Revista Transcultural de Música
Editor invitado: Alejandro L. Madrid

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Special issue on Music and Performance Studies
Trans. Revista Transcultural de Música
Guest Editor: Alejandro L. Madrid
Deadline for receipt of abstracts: September 1, 2007
Deadline for receipt of final manuscripts: September 1, 2008
Trans. Revista Transcultural de Música invites submissions for a special interdisciplinary issue on Music and Performance Studies, to be guest edited by Alejandro L. Madrid (University of Illinois at Chicago). Combining social and aesthetic theory in the study of embodied culture, the emerging discipline of performance studies provides a rich conceptual framework to understand a wide variety of phenomena, from the performatic aspect of activities that explicitly involve performance (eg. music, dance, theater, ritual) to discursive, social, and political performativity (eg. the construction of identities, the enunciative use of language, political activism, and the use of the body in everyday life). This special issue seeks to emphasize the understanding of culture, social and everyday life as phenomena that are continuously re-constituted through performance.
We seek critical writing on these issues in relation to music, musical practices, discursive uses of music, and music consumption and distribution within specific social and cultural circumstances, including popular music, notated classical forms, electronic and computer music, sound installation and sound art, experimental music, and hybrid musical forms—among other possibilities.
Prospective authors are encouraged to approach the performatic and performative implications of music production, distribution, and consumption from a wide variety of angles, including (but not limited to) historical accounts of composers, performers, sound artists, music producers, music markets, music scenes, etc.; as well as interpretive, theoretical, and historical essays centering on aesthetics, discourse and image, dance, technology, diasporic culture, migration, media, particular works, musical practices, repertoires, literatures, social networks, markets, or environments.
Anonymous abstracts no longer than 250 words should be submitted to almadrid@uic.edu by September 1, 2007. A copy should be sent to edicion@sibetrans.com. They should be accompanied by a cover letter including name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, and e-mail address. Selected authors will be notified by November 1, 2007 and final manuscripts, ranging from 6,000 to 12,000 words, should be sent to the same addresses by September 1, 2008. Electronic images may be embedded in the Word document in jpeg format. Contributors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any material for which they do not hold copyright.
