Improvisation, Community, and Social Practice: A SSHRC MCRI Research Project

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program 2007-2008

We are pleased to launch our newly awarded MCRI research project with a postdoctoral fellowship program for 2007-2008. We invite applications of postdoctoral researchers for residential fellowships at the University of Guelph, McGill University, or Université de Montréal (in association with the Centre de recherche en éthique).

Improvisation, Community, and Social Practice

This research project plays a leading role in defining a new field of interdisciplinary inquiry. It brings together a dynamic international research team with a demonstrated track record in grant management and student training, and it fosters innovative partnerships with community-based organizations. Outcomes will range across a wide spectrum of electronic, broadcast, and print media, with a focus on policy-oriented and community-facing impacts. The project will have a significant effect on how research is done and how its results are implemented and disseminated, both within and beyond the academy. In addition to public discourse and scholarly publication, our work highlights collaboration with arts presenters, educators, and policy makers to ensure the broadest possible impact on Canadian society.

The project’s core hypothesis is that musical improvisation is a crucial model for political, cultural, and ethical dialogue and action. Taking as a point of departure performance practices from post-1960s jazz and creative improvised music that cannot readily be scripted, predicted, or compelled into orthodoxy, we argue that the innovative working models of improvisation developed by creative practitioners have helped to promote a dynamic exchange of cultural forms, and to encourage new, socially responsive forms of community building across national, cultural, and artistic boundaries. Improvisation, in short, has much to tell us about the ways in which communities based on such forms are politically and materially pertinent to envisioning and sounding alternative ways of knowing and being in the world. Improvisation demands shared responsibility for participation in community, an ability to negotiate differences, and a willingness to accept the challenges of risk and contingency. Furthermore, in an era when diverse peoples and communities of interest struggle to forge historically new forms of affiliation across cultural divides, the participatory and civic virtues of engagement, dialogue, respect, and community-building inculcated through improvisatory practices take on a particular urgency.

Objectives

Our postdoctoral fellowships, funded through the Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI) program at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), support the most promising new scholars in the emerging interdisciplinary field of critical studies in improvisation, and assist them in establishing a research base at an important time in their research careers.

Our project seeks to contribute to interdisciplinary research and graduate training in this emerging field. We encourage applications from researchers working in the principal research areas related to our project: music, cultural studies, political studies, sociology and anthropology, English studies, theatre and performance studies, French studies, law, philosophy, and communications. We also welcome applications from different research areas, inasmuch as their research has a direct link with the social, cultural, or political implications of improvised musical practices.

We are particularly interested in critically informed interdisciplinary research proposals that are prompted by the theory and practice of contemporary improvised music and its related social implications. Our research program seeks to create a climate of genuine intellectual excitement where scholars pursue research projects and participate in collaborative research activities as part of a broader network of critical practice. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to participate in project seminars, institutes, and annual colloquia, and will benefit from the stimulating intellectual environment provided by both our extensive and inter-institutional research network and our wide range of community partners. Postdoctoral fellows will play an active role in planning the activities and research of the project.

Description

Our postdoctoral fellowships provide stipendiary support to recent Ph.D. graduates who are undertaking original research, publishing research findings, and developing and expanding personal research networks.

Fellowships will normally be awarded to candidates affiliated with a university other than that which awarded the Ph.D.

Value and Duration

Our SSHRC funded MCRI Postdoctoral Fellowships are valued at $31,500 CDN per year. These are non-renewable fellowships, tenable for a 12 month period beginning in September 2007.

Eligibility, Application, and Deadline

Applicants are invited to submit a research proposal focusing on the social implications (broadly construed) of improvised musical practices. Successful candidates will be chosen on the basis of a rigorous and open nation-wide process of application, with our project's management team serving as the selection committee. Criteria for selection are the quality and originality of the proposed research, the fit with our project's overall mandate and objectives, the candidate's record of scholarly achievement, and his/her ability to benefit from the activities associated with our project. Postdoctoral fellows will receive competitive research stipends, logistical assistance for relocation, office space equipped with state-of-the-art computers, access to the services of the host institution (library, etc), and administrative, placement, and research assistance as needed. In return, fellows are expected to pursue the research project submitted in their application, to participate in our project’s research activities (colloquia, seminars, institutes), and to present their work in progress in the context of our project’s seminars and workshops.

Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. at the time of application (to be conferred by 1 November 2007). The completed application package should be received by no later than April 30, 2007.

Electronic applications are welcome, provided that original hard copies of transcripts and reference letters are submitted. Notification date: June 2007.

Cultural Studies Conference in Jamaica / Conferencia sobre Estudios Culturales en Jamaica

7th International Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference

Cultural Studies Initiative
University of the West Indies
Kingston, Jamaica

CALL FOR SESSIONS

Proposals are invited for SESSIONS at the 7th International
Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference, scheduled for July 3 to 7,
2008 in the Caribbean.

The Caribbean could well be regarded as one of the first
crossroads of the modern era, where Africa and Asia met Europe on
Amerindian soil. The conditions were a forced and bitter crucible. The
results of that encounter contributed not only to the making of the
modern western world but also to the dynamism that is central to all
the cultures of the Western Hemisphere.

Of Sacred Crossroads
Being a site of conquest, dislocation, crossings, enslavement
and rebellion, but also of memory and survival, hope of return,
culture-building, in-between-ness, and immense creativity and heritage,
the Caribbean is a relevant site for hosting the 7th International
Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference, under the theme Of Sacred
Crossroads.
Contemporary emphasis on materialism and consumerism as
measures of our humanity, arising from the unbridled excesses to which
science and technology have been sometimes put, is of growing concern,
putting under duress the intangibles embodied in the values by which we
live as human beings. Out of these concerns has sprung deepening
dialogue at the interface between science and spirituality. UNESCO?s
celebration of the intangible heritage of humankind is a timely
reminder that civilizations rise not only on great edifices, monuments
and artefacts that defy time, but also on those moments of ?livity?, or
human relationships, that last only as long as they are lived, without
which human life would have little meaning.

Of Sacred Crossroads captures many of these concerns in a
manner that allows for the broadest of interpretation and accommodation
across disciplines and forms?religion, art, dance, song, orature,
healing, re-creation, performance, ritual, belief systems, ethics,
globalization, communication, among others. Key themes for the
Conference include: Rituals of arrival and contact; Crossings?the art
of the crossroads; Spirituality and identity; Language rituals;
Globalization and the spirit; Indigenous spiritualities; Rituals of
conflict - rites of rebellion; Virtual realities; virtual
spiritualities; (Spiritual) Tourism; Rituals, substances and sacred
geographies; The spirit of music; Cultures of reconciliation;
Storytelling; Crossroad deities and divination; Geographies of the body
and spirit.

General areas of interest include:

THE VENUE
The 7th Crossroads Conference will be held at the University of
the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica, the largest of
the three UWI campuses. The Campus is situated in a suburb of the city
of Kingston, itself a cultural magnet, with excellent communications
and telecommunications systems, accessibility through two international
airports, and a highly developed road network.

The campus, with a student population of over 15,000, has a
rich tradition in hosting international conferences. Nestled in the
Hope Valley under the Blue Mountains, the campus is itself culturally
diverse, drawing on regional as well as international students and
boasting its own choir, steel band, dance group and rich nightlife.
There is accommodation in student Halls of Residence as well as the
Mona Visitor's Lodge, and interconnectivity including an extensive
wireless network is a feature.
Given Jamaica's appeal as a tourist destination we encourage
international participants to plan a vacation which can include
excursions to famous beaches in Negril, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay or
Portland. Various cultural and natural sites of interest include, in
Kingston, the Bob Marley Museum and the National Gallery of Art, and
elsewhere in the island the spectacular Dunn?s River Falls, the Blue
and John Crow Mountains National Park, Seville Heritage Park, and
Treasure Beach, among many others.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration information will be available by summer 2007.
Note: To avoid no-shows and guarantee the quality of all sessions, all
paper presenters will be asked to register before April 30, 2008.

Since the only musical market that's growing is Spanish-language, now everyone and their mother is going to do albums in Spanish, from J-Lo to Beyonce. "Spanish is becoming the secret garden, where [artists] can go smell the flowers without being 'wolves' [?]. They can be expressive and romantic," says one producer. Link, translated. (Exoticism, anyone?) Anyhow, we'll see if this kind of persecution of non-traditional distribution systems in Spanish will happen as it has has in English - suing peer-to-peer software users, arresting mixtape DJs, etc....

Miranda beats Green / Miranda le gana a Green

Miranda won. I told you so. It was a wierd fight, though. Green was trying to play it cool and stay out of reach, tapping a Miranda and going for many less punches than Miranda, who just got hotter with each round, a couple of time just lowering his hands, making faces, and being like "fuckin hit me already!" One time he stuck out his tongue and pantomimed jerking off. Finally in the 8th, Miranda lowered the right hand he had up for practically the whole fight at precisely the moment when he was backing up. Green sent his Codrington-tested left hook at him and for the first time in his 29 fight career, Miranda was on the ground. It was more an opportune shot than a real haymaker but it made Miranda mad. By the 10th round, Miranda had Green reeling, knocking him down twice and pummeling him straight into the last bell - even though he already had the fight pretty much won in the scores, he couldn't control his urge to pummel Green, and if this had been a 12 round fight, he probably would gotten the KO he seemed to want so badly. Still, Miranda's most attractive feature - his power and aggression - might someday get the best of his worst feature - lack of discipline. This guy just couldn't go 10 rounds of chess match and really just wanted to tussle. He needs a bit more discipline to be a great boxer - I mean, why risk stepping close to Green for the KO when he clearly already had the fight won in decision (The scores were 96-91, 96-91 and 97-90, all for Miranda)? One of these days somebody's gonna rope-a-dope him, although they'd have to be a power hitter (like Green is) to get Miranda to even notice. But that same hotheadedness is what makes him a great fighter to watch. Let's see how he does with Kelly Pavlik, probabloy his next opponent.

ESPN article

And in other news, Colombian super-middleweight Alejandro Berrío knocked out Russian-German Robert Steiglitz in 3 for the title in the International Boxing Federation - the same belt vacated by Joe Calzaghe. Link

Editorial sobre Palenque/Editorial on Palenque

El Tiempo, Colombia's national newspaper, normally silent on racial and ethnic issues, weighs in in an editorial on the Afro-Colombian community of San Basilio de Palenque. This editorial, which advocates for education to preserve the community's unique Afro-Spanish Creole dialect, suggests that culture is in fact a useful political tool for focusing national attention on the issues of ethnic communities like Palenque. The challenge is to move beyond a superficial acknowledgement of "nationl diversity" and toward conversations on more painful issues of discrimination, marginalization, and the violent history of the Colombian nation and of black people within it.

With a staggering 3 million internally displaced persons and more than
70,000 people killed or forcibly disappeared since the late 1980s,
Colombia has been described by the United Nations as having the worst
humanitarian crisis in the Americas. Citizen insecurity in Colombia is
the result of many complex factors, in particular an internal armed
conflict – in existence for over forty years – and a profound social
conflict, characterized by deepening levels of poverty, growing
inequalities, and deeply rooted economic, social and political
exclusion. Colombia’s ethnic minorities, in particular its Indigenous
and Afro-Colombian peoples, have suffered disproportionately from both
conflicts to the point that, according to the United Nations Special
Rapporteur on Indigenous Peoples, some Indigenous peoples in that
country are currently in danger of extinction.

This conference will bring together activists, academics and key
representatives of Colombia’s Indigenous and Afro-Colombian peoples to
examine the dramatic situation facing these threatened communities and
their proposals for positive change.

Censo afrocolombiano 2005/ AfroColombian Census

This video (for which I helped write the music) was aired in 2005 as a promotional campaign for black Colombians to identify themeselves as such on the national census. It uses many of the common terms which are used to identify black Colombians in different parts of Colombia.
