Foro Artistas Colombianos

SEGUNDO FORO GENERAL

COLECTIVO DE ARTISTAS COLOMBIANOS

(Generación de espacios constructivos)

Amigas y amigos

Cordial saludo

The Colombian documentary "Sanpachando" (SAN PACHO ES PA'L QUE LO GOCE) will be part of the "AFRICAN DIASPORA FILM FESTIVAL".

Monday, November 26th
@ ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES
32 Second Avenue @ 2nd Street
4:20 pm

Saturday, December 1st
@ TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
525 West 120th Street.
5:10 pm

Sanpachando ("SAN PACHO ES PA'L QUE LO GOCE") explores the afro-ethnic, religious, and cultural meaning of a festival honoring Saint Francis of Assisi. Through music, dancing and first hand accounts, the documentary vividly encapsulates aspects of the social, religious, and political foundations that hold the festival together. It examines both its material and symbolic expressions. Musical montage, local commentary and interviews weave a narrative of survival, told from the perspective of a robust afro-cultural identity. Located in Quibdó, Chocó, (a city on the northern part of the Colombian Pacific coast) this community reveals a history of marginalization and resilience that contests its own segregation and exploitation. In this sense, Sanpachando offers a different vision of what it means to be and to feel Colombian.

Music journalist Robert Palmer

On the 10th anniversary of the seminal music critic's death, some testimonies to him and his work by his music journalist progeny. He might not be so beloved by ethnomusicology for his "gonzo hippie jam session" approach and "liberate me from my uptight urban modernity" ideology, but how can you not be just a li'l bit jealous of a guy who took Ornette Coleman to jam at Jajouka? (OC also played "Here Comes the Bride" at one of RP weddings, also pretty cool!) Also, I have to admit that Deep Blues was a very seminal book for me back in the day. Anyhow, the link.
And anotha one, (like Biggie said.)
One more, for a documentary about his trip to Morocce called The Hand of Fatima.

AAA Opposes U.S. Military’s Human Terrain System Project

The American Anthropological Association’s Executive Board recently passed a Statement regarding ethical aspects of the U.S. Military’s Human Terrain System (HTS) project. The project, which has received widespread national and international media coverage, embeds anthropologists and other social scientists in military teams in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ethical and procedural concerns regarding anthropologists working with U.S. Military and Intelligence agencies have been under investigation by an ad hoc commission of the AAA. The Commission will submit their final report on this subject—which extends beyond the particulars of the HTS project—during the AAA’s Annual Meeting in Washington DC.

To facilitate discussion on this subject, the AAA has created a blog as a forum for members to post comments regarding the Executive Board Statement and related issues.

Eight foot sea scorpion!

Nothing to do with anything that I usually post on this blog, but how cool is an eight foot long sea scorpion with 18-inch claws? Apparently they just found one of a fossil of one of these things. This takes me back to being a little kid at the dinosaur wing of the Museum of Natural history...

In One Fell Swoop, Jay-Z Impresses Critics, Fans, the U.N. and Wall Street

From the New York Times (link):

The accolades Jay-Z have recently poured forth from all sectors. His new album was critically acclaimed and sold more than any other last week, which tied him with Elvis at 10 chart-topping albums.
And the acclaim was extended in some unlikely places, such as the dark, rarefied set of the Charlie Rose show. Jay-Z and Mr. Rose traded compliments for the full hour, which culminated in Mr. Rose offering a heartfelt lesson about the meaning of life.
Even the United Nations recognized him for helping to improve water and sanitation across the world with an improbably informal shout-out from Secretary General Ban Ki Moon:
"My man Jay-Z has been a wonderful partner to the UN, and a champion of those in need around the world."
Financially, paychecks for his work as chief executive of Def Jam records, a recording artist and builder of a clothing company made him the richest man in hip-hop, according to Forbes.
Last year, he made 34 million in American dollars, but it was his use of stacks of euros in a recent music video that added to jitters credited to Gisele Bundchen and garnered the attention of Wall Street watchers everywhere.
Jay-Z, the New Alan Greenspan,” the headlines cooed, but another piece of financial advice dispensed during a rap song seemed less likely to win a similar following. In “Laff at Em,” he divulges his portfolio, saying that he has 200 million in cash and 35 million in stock.
While that might seem far less diversified than investors working with similarly-sized pools of capital, he didn’t say whether it was in dollars or euros, a crucial difference in a year that has seen the euro gain 11 percent. In the unlikely case that he dumped all of his cash into euros at the beginning of the year, he would’ve almost quadrupled the gains made on the S & P 500, which is up 3 percent.

Academics and self doubt

According to The Chronicle for Higher Education, self-doubt and the nagging suspicion that we got to where we are by bullshitting, not brains is rife in academica.

"By many accounts, academics — graduate students, junior professors, and even some full professors — relate to this only a little less than they relate to eye strain.

The idea quickly struck a chord with scholars from the working class, along with other beneficiaries of the social mobility that infused higher education in the 1960s and 1970s. Those new academics bristled at the old guard's sense of entitlement. But they found themselves crippled by a stubborn inability to feel the same. Meanwhile, scholars who came from academic legacies — the children of the old guard — had feelings of unearned privilege to contend with."
