Says The PostThe two brothers from Ecuador had attended a church party and had stopped at a bar afterward. They may have been a bit tipsy as they walked home in the dead of night, arm-in-arm, leaning close to each other, a common tableau of men in Latino cultures, but one easily misinterpreted by the biased mind. Suddenly a car drew up. It was 3:30 a.m. Sunday, and the intersection of Bushwick Avenue and Kossuth Place in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a half-block from the brothers’ apartment, was nearly deserted — but not quite. Witnesses, the police said, heard some of what happened next.
Moments later, a maroon SUV occupied by three black men pulled up while the brothers were holding each other by the arms, cops said. Believing the brothers were gay, one of the black men spewed, "Check out those f----ts over there," police said. The trio then jumped out of the SUV with the driver brandishing an aluminum bat and accosted the two brothers, cops said. As one of the suspects shouted, "Fuck you, Spanish people," the bat-wielding driver allegedly bashed Sucuzhanay in the head, crushing his skull.Jose Osvaldo Sucuzhanay, 31, the Ecuadorian owner of a local real estate agency, was taken off life support and died.

Parenteticamente, no debe sorporender que uno de estos muchachos en LI es 1/2 puertorriqueño. Aún aparte del hecho de que este tipo andaba esa noche con blancos, hay en esta ciudad una fuerte tensión, en parte sobre cuestiones de ciudadanía, en parte racial, entre los Latinos de ascendencia caribeña nacidos en el país, y los inmigrantes sur- y centro-americanos...

¿Icono o Mito?
Raúl Manzano plasma la experiencia inmigrante/americana, a través de pinturas de la Estatua de la Libertad celebrando Latin American Cultural Week
NUEVA YORK, 1 de octubre de 2008 Esperanza, libertad y justicia para todos es el tema central de la exposición de Raúl Manzano ¿Icono o Mito? que se inaugura en la galería de Empire State College celebrando Latin American Cultural Week en la ciudad de Nueva York. La recepción es el jueves 23 de octubre, de 5:30 pm a 7:30 pm, en el 325 Hudson Street, 5 piso (entrada sobre la calle Van Dam).
La exposición presenta y pone en duda el significado de la Estatua de la Libertad como un símbolo de libertad y democracia. Con colores vibrantes y un lenguaje visual personal, sus pinturas estimulan las emociones, invitan al dialogo y reflexión acerca de los eventos importantes mundiales. El artista estará presente durante la apertura para hablar sobre su obra. La exposición estará abierta desde el 20 de octubre hasta el 20 de diciembre. La entrada es gratuita. Sus obras representan e incorporan el ideal de la Estatua de la Libertad en diferentes formas para envolver al observador introspectivamente o como a alguien que ha sido observado. Su trabajo provoca discusiones apasionantes acerca del verdadero significado de la libertad, haciendo que estos reflejen en los diversos aspectos de indentidad o se encuentren atraidos por las visions de otros. Esta interacción y discurso, en imagen y significado, es el mensaje intrínsico de Manzano,? dijo la Dr. Cynthia L. Ward, decana interina del centro metropolitano.
La obra de Manzano a contribuido a la educación y dialogo de temas controversiales. Sus exhibiciones incluye ?Campaña de alerta contra el SIDA?, en 1996, en el Broadway Mall Community Center, ?en América?, en 2003, en la cual represento la experiencia del inmigrante, en la galería William Edwards, en la Fairleigh Dickinson University, y ?América al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios?, en 2007, en St. Francis College, Brooklyn, en donde Manzano ofrecio a los observadores una forma de reflejar sobre sus percepciones acerca del futuro de la nación.
Raúl Manzano, un inmigrante de origen colombiano, ha tenido una carrera desafiante durante sus veintiocho años en los Estados Unidos pero su obra y filosofía esta comprometida a una causa, crear conciencia, provocar pensamiento y promover el valor del arte para cambios sociales. Manzano obtuvo su maestría en artes de Empire State College y su BFA, de la School of Visual Arts, ambas instituciones en la ciudad de Nueva York. El es director del programa de verano de la SVA ?Pintando en Barcelona?, en Barcelona, España y mentor en las artes en Empire State College.
Empire State College, una institución lider en educación para adultos, se enorgullece en participar en el 3rd Latin American Cultural Week. Esta exposición es un ejemplo de como nuestra misión, metas, valores, y espíritu son demostrados. McCain on DY: "I just want to say thank you Daddy Yankee," said McCain, who also referred to him as Ramon, since his given name is Ramon Ayala. McCain said Yankee has been married 15 years, had grown up poor in Puerto Rico and made "the right choice" in life.
DY on McCain: "I believe in his ideals and his proposals to lead this nation" and that McCain was the best "fighter for the immigration issue."
Immigration, mostly from the Dominican Republic, is a huge deal in Puerto Rico...

[The victim's white fiancée, who grew up in Shenandoah and has two children with the murdered man, said] "I plan on moving out of this town as fast as I can. Not because I'm scared. I just don't want to see my children have to deal with what their father dealt with."

Ay, Dios mío: Dominican Yorks on Broadway
The NY Times theater section has a review of "In The Heights," a new Broadway show that takes place in Wash Heights. Aside from the relative positive and negative points of bringing the Hts. to Times Square (see below), the best part of the review is the old (white?), if to his credit, enthusiastic, fuddy-duddy who wrote it - lines like "the rhymed verse currently known as rap" (um, yeah, since about 1975), and "zesty choreography."
The fact of Dominican visibility on Broadway is definitely a good thing (the only other pop culture representation of a Dominican I can think of is Tracy Morgan's Dominican Lou character), as is the fact that writer/actor Lin-Manuel Miranda could get it out there. But the thing fairly reeks of cutesiness. Remember the movie version of Mambo Kings, with the irrepressibly plucky pair of brothers running around being plucky, gazing deep into chicks' eyes, dancing around with trombones or whatever, and crossing themselves every five minutes? Shit like that starts to grate real fast, and we all know there's going to be plenty of zest, vivaciousness and pluckiness in "In the Heights." Well, that's what they want from us so that's what we (or at least "In the Heights," Mambo Kings, and that ilk) are gonna give 'em. (Talk about Latinos, Inc.) That all of this goes hand-in-hand with the gentrification of El Barrio just speaks to the deep links between multiculturalism and neoliberalism. So it goes. Like Audre Lorde said, the way they get you is that you've got to tear the master's house down with his own tools.

El Teatro Hispano GALA concluye su 31ª Temporada "A tu gusto", con el estreno mundial de Latido Negro: Perú's African Beat, un musical original concebido y dirigido por el famoso actor y músico Rafael Santa Cruz, con coreografía de Lalo Izquierdo, ex bailarin de Victoria
Santa Cruz y mas tarde miembro fundador del grupo conocido internacionalmente: Perú Negro.
El elenco incluye entre otros a la cantante Vicky Leyva y la actriz Zonaly Ruiz ( que hace an~os encarno a Lucha Reyes en miniserie de Michel Gomez), 2 bailarinas afroamericnas de tap y danza moderna. En total un grupo de 13 artistas en escena.
Escrita por Fernando Barreto, Latido Negro es un entretenido e informativo recorrido por los ritmos peruanos de herencia africana atraves de un formato de obra de teatro musical. Un proyecto ambicioso y que se hace por primera vez en EEUU que no solo trae danza y
musica sino ademas teatro.
Las funciones son en español con subtítulos en inglés (mediante una pantalla por la que corren los textos ya traducidos para el publico que no habla castellano que se calcula sera mas de la mitad del publico asistenteLa obra va del el 7 de junio al 1 de julio, de jueves a sábados a las 8 pm y los domingos a las 4 pm.

Latido Negro: Perú?s African Beat cuenta las divertidas y a veces acaloradas discusiones sobre las raíces culturales en las que se enreda un conjunto de bailarines y músicos afroperuanos de Washington DC durante los ensayos para una importante gira internacional. Al mismo tiempo, este musical ofrece una variedad de estilos y sonidos que inyectan una
nueva vida a las danzas y expresiones tradicionales de la cultura afro-peruana.
A ritmo del cajón, cajita, quijada de burro, zapeto, tap dance y una banda de musicos tocando en vivo, los actores y bailarines se expresan a través de textos y poemas ademas de compartir algunos problemas e inquietudes que afrontan en el cotidiano relacionados a la
discriminacion , identidad , desigualdad, fusion artistica, mestizaje, etc.
Los precios de las entradas los viernes y sábados son $34, y jueves y domingos $30. Entradas para estudiantes, personas de edad avanzada (65+) y militares $20 los domingos y $26 los viernes y sábados. Hay también descuentos adicionales para grupos de 10 o más personas. El Teatro Hispano GALA concluye su 31ª Temporada "A tu gusto", con el estreno mundial de Latido Negro: Perú's African Beat, un musical original concebido y dirigido por el famoso actor y músico Rafael Santa Cruz, con coreografía de Lalo Izquierdo, ex bailarin de Victoria
Santa Cruz y mas tarde miembro fundador del grupo conocido internacionalmente: Perú Negro.
El elenco incluye entre otros a la cantante Vicky Leyva y la actriz Zonaly Ruiz ( que hace an~os encarno a Lucha Reyes en miniserie de Michel Gomez), 2 bailarinas afroamericnas de tap y danza moderna. En total un grupo de 13 artistas en escena.
Escrita por Fernando Barreto, Latido Negro es un entretenido e informativo recorrido por los ritmos peruanos de herencia africana atraves de un formato de obra de teatro musical. Un proyecto ambicioso y que se hace por primera vez en EEUU que no solo trae danza y
musica sino ademas teatro.
Las funciones son en español con subtítulos en inglés (mediante una pantalla por la que corren los textos ya traducidos para el publico que no habla castellano que se calcula sera mas de la mitad del publico asistenteLa obra va del el 7 de junio al 1 de julio, de jueves a sábados a las 8 pm y los domingos a las 4 pm.
Esta producción ha sido possible gracias al generoso apoyo de la Comisión de las Artes y Humanidades del Distrito de Columbia y con la colaboración de la Washington Performing Arts Society. La Noche de Gala y Prensa será el sábado 9 de junio, siendo el anfitrión

The Report addresses the following issues: The anti-immigration movement: As Solana Larsen shows, this movement is a complex, decentralized web that both private and public power, from the white supremacist fringe to the halls of Congress. It not only musters popular support and helps to foster a general anti-immigrant climate, but it also raises millions of dollars to advance its policy goals in Washington.
The detention of Immigrants: As Forrest Wilder reports, immigration authorities have launched a crackdown, arresting undocumented people, including families with children, and jailing them indefinitely. This has ramped up demand for facilities, giving rise to a nationwide “detention archipelago”a series of detention centers largely run for profit by companies contracted by the government.
The truth about day laborers: Anti-immigrant activists have targeted urban day laborers, most of them Latino immigrants, as they congregate looking for work. Drawing on a national survey of day laborers, Abel Valenzuela Jr. demolishes five of the most pernicious myths about them and discusses the National Day Laborer Organizing Network’s successes in protecting these workers’ rights.
Labor and Latino immigrants: The massive immigrant protests last year took many by surprise, but they were made possible by more than a decade of immigrant labor organizing in California.
