¿Icono o Mito?

Raúl Manzano plasma la experiencia inmigrante/americana, a través de pinturas de la Estatua de la Libertad celebrando Latin American Cultural Week

NUEVA YORK, 1 de octubre de 2008 Esperanza, libertad y justicia para todos es el tema central de la exposición de Raúl Manzano ¿Icono o Mito? que se inaugura en la galería de Empire State College celebrando Latin American Cultural Week en la ciudad de Nueva York. La recepción es el jueves 23 de octubre, de 5:30 pm a 7:30 pm, en el 325 Hudson Street, 5 piso (entrada sobre la calle Van Dam).

La exposición presenta y pone en duda el significado de la Estatua de la Libertad como un símbolo de libertad y democracia. Con colores vibrantes y un lenguaje visual personal, sus pinturas estimulan las emociones, invitan al dialogo y reflexión acerca de los eventos importantes mundiales. El artista estará presente durante la apertura para hablar sobre su obra. La exposición estará abierta desde el 20 de octubre hasta el 20 de diciembre. La entrada es gratuita. Sus obras representan e incorporan el ideal de la Estatua de la Libertad en diferentes formas para envolver al observador introspectivamente o como a alguien que ha sido observado. Su trabajo provoca discusiones apasionantes acerca del verdadero significado de la libertad, haciendo que estos reflejen en los diversos aspectos de indentidad o se encuentren atraidos por las visions de otros. Esta interacción y discurso, en imagen y significado, es el mensaje intrínsico de Manzano,? dijo la Dr. Cynthia L. Ward, decana interina del centro metropolitano.



La obra de Manzano a contribuido a la educación y dialogo de temas controversiales. Sus exhibiciones incluye ?Campaña de alerta contra el SIDA?, en 1996, en el Broadway Mall Community Center, ?en América?, en 2003, en la cual represento la experiencia del inmigrante, en la galería William Edwards, en la Fairleigh Dickinson University, y ?América al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios?, en 2007, en St. Francis College, Brooklyn, en donde Manzano ofrecio a los observadores una forma de reflejar sobre sus percepciones acerca del futuro de la nación.

Raúl Manzano, un inmigrante de origen colombiano, ha tenido una carrera desafiante durante sus veintiocho años en los Estados Unidos pero su obra y filosofía esta comprometida a una causa, crear conciencia, provocar pensamiento y promover el valor del arte para cambios sociales. Manzano obtuvo su maestría en artes de Empire State College y su BFA, de la School of Visual Arts, ambas instituciones en la ciudad de Nueva York. El es director del programa de verano de la SVA ?Pintando en Barcelona?, en Barcelona, España y mentor en las artes en Empire State College.

Black Portraiture in the Low Countries from Rubens to Dumas

Una nueva exhibición abre el sábado en el museo Nieuwe Kerk en Amsterdam, trazando las representaciones de las personas afrodescendientes en los Países Bajos desde el año 1300. Son 132 cuadras, dibujos y manuscritos con trabajos de maestros como Rubens, Van Maerlant, Rembrandt, Mostaert, Breitner, y Karl Appel.

A new exhibition opens at Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Kerk on Saturday, charting the portrayal of black people by artists of the Low Countries from 1300 onwards. The 135 paintings, drawings and manuscripts on display include works in oils by Rubens, manuscripts by the poet Van Maerlant and studies by Rembrandt, Mostaert, Breitner and Karl Appel.

Last year saw important celebrations of the bi-centenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in the English-speaking world. Our event has been designed to address such a historical occasion from a Latin American perspective, by highlighting and celebrating the African cultural legacy in Latin America.

Latin America is the synthesis of various peoples, races and cultures merged together into one, after a painful and inhumane process brought about by the colonization of the so-called New World with the transportation and enslavement of Africans as well as the Indigenous peoples. Latin American countries with their unique syncretistic culture have come to realize their true identity. Africa has undoubtedly played an important, vital, but often overlooked and forgotten role.

Africa’s influence is ever present in the cultural make up of Latin America. The ‘cimarrón’ or runaway African slave symbolizes for us the free and live spirit of Africa in Latin America, hence the name for our event where we will pay homage to its cultural legacy. It is their contribution, together with the Amerindian and European that make Latin America so special and unique.

CIMARRON! will take place on the 11th to 23rd February 2008 in Canning House, Bolivar Hall, Conway Hall, SOAS University and other smaller venues across London, this will be a free for all special event that will celebrate the African cultural legacy in Latin America, through music, dance, art, film, ethnicity and culture as a whole. The event will feature:

- Cultural lectures by renowned academics, such as Peter Wade (Manchester University), Matthias Rohrig Assuncao (Essex University), Alessandra Basso Ortiz (UCL, London), Michael Birenbaum (New York University), Jesus Garcia (Venezuela)

‘Music, Race and Nation in Colombia: Musica Tropical in Colombia’ Peter Wade, Manchester University

Long a favorite on dance floors in Latin America, the porro, cumbia, and vallenato styles that make up Colombia's música tropical are now enjoying international success. How did this music-which has
its roots in a black, marginal region of the country-manage, from the 1940s onward, to become so popular in a nation that had prided itself on its white heritage? Peter Wade explores the history of música tropical, analyzing its rise in the context of the development of the broadcast media, rapid urbanization, and regional struggles for power.

Using archival sources and oral histories, Wade shows how big band renditions of cumbia and porro in the 1940s and 1950s suggested both old traditions and new liberties, especially for women, speaking to a deeply rooted image of black music as sensuous. Recently, nostalgic, "whitened" versions of música tropical have gained popularity as part of government-sponsored multiculturalism.

Iona Hogendoorn’s exhibition pays homage to the courage of an Afro-Colombian peace community in their struggle for survival amid the violence they experience regularly in the rainforest, near the Pacific coast. Cacarica, designated a Peace Community, is situated exactly in the spot where they plan to complete the Pan-American Highway, this and other mega-projects: an inter-oceanic canal, wood, palm oil (bio-diesel), make this a very valuable stretch of land for various powerful groups, including the National Army, who fight over its control and ownership.

’Los Ganga en Cuba’ Alessandra Basso Ortiz, UCL

The Ganga Longoba is a kin related community of African descent settled in the town of Perico, in thecounty of Matanzas in Cuba. They practice a religion that in many aspects resembles other Afro-Cuban religions but which they claim to be idiosyncratic. Alessandra Basso Ortiz, examines how religious tradition and group identity were forged among the Ganga Longoba, and what enabled an ethnogenic process to take place.

The story of Esteban Montejo the last cimarron in Cuba, 103 years old in 1963 started recounting his life to Cuban writer Miguel Barnet, how he was brought from Africa as a slave, how he ran away and lived as a ‘cimarron’ and later was part of the Cuban liberating Mambi Army.

‘The Abolition of Slavery in Brazil: Memory and Historiography’
Matthias Rohrig Assuncao (University of Essex)

The public perception of the Abolition of slavery in Brazil has changed dramatically over the last twenty years. The older historiography described it as a generous act of philanthropy by princess-regent Isabel or as the result of an urban, middle-class led abolitionist movement. The Brazilian Black Movement, in contrast, has emphasized the enslaved own struggle for freedom, and has elected the maroon leader Zumbi as the symbol of Black resistance.

The more recent historiography has also highlighted the importance of slave agency in the process that led to abolition. Yet at the same time the growing visibility of Afro-Brazilian culture has brought to the foreground the songs of black communities of the interior that praise princess Isabel and insist in celebrating the 13th of May, date of the Golden Law she signed in 1888. The lecture will introduce those complex and fascinating developments, where history and memory of Abolition are subject to permanent re-elaborations.

‘Abosaos, Lumbalús and Patacorés: Afro-Colombian Musical Practice at the Fringes of the Diaspora’ Michael Birenbaum Quintero, New York University

Although Colombia has the third largest black population in the Americas, the cultural expressions of black Colombians are largely unknown. This talk will describe the varied musical practices of black communities across Colombia, including the Caribbean coast, Chocó province, the runaway slave community of San Basilio de Palenque, and the Cauca Valley, with particular focus on the music of the southern Pacific coast.

This talk will examine the historical processes of retention and syncretism that have formed traditional Afro-Colombian practices and linked them to Colombian music in general, extending this discussion into the field of the newer popular musics that have been created and/or embraced by black Colombians. Finally, the presentation will touch on some of the reasons for the marginalization of Afro-Colombian musical forms both in Colombia and abroad, and the ways this marginalization is being resisted and counteracted.

Una vez más, la corporación COLECTIVO DE ARTISTAS COLOMBIANOS colectivodeartistascolombianos@hotmail.com convoca a todas las áreas del arte Nacional en todas sus dimensiones (Artes musicales, danzarias, dramáticas, plásticas, escénicas, audiovisuales, literarias y otro (a) s), con el propósito de emprender acciones conjuntas y generar espacios que articulen propuestas constructivas que conduzcan a fortalecer la profesión del Arte en una actividad digna.

Infortunadamente, en Colombia la Condición del Artista, se encuentra aún sin definir. No obstante, sus derechos económicos, morales y sociales son reconocidos internacionalmente. En el país, sigue siendo notoria la ausencia de un estatuto legal que desde una perspectiva laboral, regule y proteja el ejercicio de esta actividad profesional. Conforme la Declaración aprobada por la UNESCO, por “Artista” se entiende toda persona que crea o que participa por su interpretación en la creación o la recreación de obras de arte. En consecuencia, los artistas estamos en la obligación de diseñar estrategias que nos permitan acercarnos, reconocernos, integrarnos y organizarnos.

Para este segundo fraternal encuentro de artistas, hemos invitado a dos calificados profesionales quienes nos orientarán acerca de la problemática del sector artístico. En primera instancia, la doctora MARTHA BLANCO en su breve intervención, nos ilustrará con relación al “Proyecto de Vida de los Artistas”. Seguidamente, el doctor GUILLERMO HERNÁNDEZ miembro de la Secretaría de Cultura, Recreación y Deporte, abordará el tema de la “Estampilla Procultura”.

Luego, se instalarán por separado las distintas mesas de discusión y concertación, en cuya agenda se abordarán asuntos transversales que competen al sector artístico, tales como un diagnóstico de cada sector, seguridad social, estatuto laboral, fuentes de trabajo, participación en políticas culturales, emprendimiento empresarial, conformación de redes, mecanismos de organización, necesidades, soluciones y demás ítems.

Posteriormente, nos reuniremos nuevamente en plenaria para sacar conclusiones, tomar atenta nota de las propuestas planteadas y seguir avanzando en la consolidación del sector.

Aprovechamos la ocasión para desearles una feliz navidad y un próspero año nuevo a todos los hombres y mujeres de buena voluntad, deseando que el todopoderoso traiga para Colombia y todos los pueblos del mundo muchas bendiciones.

Exposición de arte colombiana en el Reino Unido terminó con el retiro de una de las obras del artista Wilson Díaz, que mostraba un video de guerrille

"William López, director del museo de la Universidad Nacional y director de la maestría en Museología de la misma institución, quien conoce la obra general de Wilson Díaz, dice respecto del video Los rebeldes del sur: “No es una apología a la guerrilla. Es muy tonto y superficial quien la interpreta de esa manera. Primero, porque es una obra de corte etnográfico, y, segundo, porque es un documento. Es un video, además de mala calidad, en donde el artista está señalando algo. Está mostrando a uno de los actores armados, y ¿qué está haciendo este actor? Cantando. Pues resulta que los guerrilleros también cantan. Pero en un clima de polaridad como el que estamos viviendo, al enemigo hay que llenarlo de la mayor cantidad de antivalores posibles para que sea un enemigo anónimo: perspectiva que hace posible una lectura paranoide de la obra”.

Pese a todo este enredo, Displaced: Contemporary art from Colombian no solo sigue montada ,sino que The Times de Londres la ha catalogado como una de las cuatro mejores que se exhiben hoy por hoy en el Reino Unido. La cuarta es un lugar privilegiado, teniendo en cuenta la enorme cantidad de exposiciones que tiene ese país. Por si fuera poco, según dice Humberto Junca, artista invitado, “una de las curadoras de la Tate Gallery (quizá la más prestigiosa institución de arte contemporáneo en el Reino Unido) va a recomendar al comité de adquisiciones de dicha institución, la compra de Los rebeldes del sur”. Se ignora, claro, si aquella recomendación estuvo empujada de alguna manera por el hecho del “retiro”. Pero con seguridad esa recomendación se hizo teniendo en cuenta, primero que todo, la calidad de la exposición en general y de la obra en particular. "

Como imaginarán los comentarios para este artículo son un índice interesantísimo de las actitudes de los colombianos sobre los vínculos entre la violencia, la cultura, y la censura...

Funky notations exhibit

This from Artforum magazine... "Between Thought and Sound: Graphic Notation in Contemporary Music" THE KITCHEN 512 West 19th Street September 7–October 20

In Western classical composition, the musical score is too often demoted to purely functional mediation between a composer’s intention and a performer’s interpretation. This vibrant multimedia exhibition, however, presents the score, in what Umberto Eco has termed “open works,” as both compositional map and performative image—not only evocative of sound but a visual object as well. Further, “Between Thought and Sound,” curated by Alex Waterman, Debra Singer, and Matthew Lyons, offers an invaluable archive of some of the most influential developments in contemporary music. Whereas many of the scores presented are already profound visual objects—such as Wadada Leo Smith’s Calder-like Multiamerica, 1999, and Alison Knowles’s richly textured (and aptly titled) Song #1 of the Three Songs: Onion Skin Song, 1975, and Notation Improvisation: Rice Paper Song, Lentil Song, String Song, 2007—it is those that hint at their musical realization, via reference to more traditional notation or accompanying text, that prove most satisfying. One could easily follow Meredith Monk’s vocal imaginings through her pen-on-paper Our Lady of Late, 1972–73, and one could even perform, if quietly, Jon Gibson’s ink-on–graph paper Rhythm Study for Voice, Hands, Feet, 1974, in the gallery. Alvin Lucier’s simple note-card drawings that compose Resonant Things, 1991, make it the most successful work—the visual juxtaposition of mundane objects as suggestive and interpretive as the sounds that might emerge from the random but not arbitrary graphic compendium. The exhibition is accompanied by three concerts during its run, which will include works by many of the composers shown on the walls. Hopefully, these performances will reawaken the dormant sounds locked in what otherwise could become static visual representations—making the exhibition as fabulously cacophonous as the sounds it begets. —T. "Infinite Island" Caribbean art in B/klyn

There's a new exhibit of contemporary art from the Caribbean at the Brooklyn Museum. From the Times review (link):

"If identity-based art was just a passing fad for the New York art establishment, it necessarily remains of considerable interest to a wider world.

How such art can be persuasively presented is, of course, the question. The thematic categories Mr. Mosaka applies to the show — religion, politics, memory, popular culture — have been used in countless shows. They are clichés by now, perceptual straitjackets rather than enlightening guides. As conceptual models, they require rethinking, as does the model some of the art follows."
